Colombia

Great Beaches, Deep Jungles and Towering Mountains

Present day Colombia is a poster child for South American tourism. It’s spectacular beaches, amazing jungle treks and vibrant city life are just some of the reasons to visit this rejuvenated country. However it hasn’t always been this way. For a long time Colombia suffered a real image problem with the never ending guerrilla war and endless stories of drug cartels.  Fortunately those days are long gone following the signing of a ceasefire between the government and FARC rebel forces in 2012. The country is now a much safer place to visit and its many attractions are coming to the fore.

Colombia’s beaches are undoubtedly one of the countries big draws. It’s dual coastlines along the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, mean it has a great variety of different beaches. For us the beaches of the Caribbean coast are the pick of the bunch, however the surfing along the Pacific Coast is much better. As well as great beaches, the country is also home to some of the finest cities in South America, including Medellín and Cartagena. Cartagena’s old town in particular is an amazing destination and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Elsewhere in Colombia you’ll find fantastic trekking opportunities, many incorporating ancient archaeological sites that pre-date the modern Columbian culture. Sites such as the Lost City, known locally as Ciudad Perdida have to be seen to be believed.

Orientation

Colombia is situated in the northwest corner of South America. Along with neighbouring Panama, it forms the land bridge which connects the continents of North and South America. As well as Panama, Colombia shares borders with Venezuela to the east, Brazil and Peru to the south and Ecuador to the west. It’s strategic location means it benefits from both a Caribbean and Pacific coastline.

Colombia is located along the equator, which runs through the southern portion of the country. Much of the northern half of the country above the equator is mountainous, while the southern half of the country is dominated by dense jungle.

Best Time to Visit Colombia

Colombia’s location on the equator means that it enjoys a consistently warm year round climate. Daily temperature are frequently above 90°F at sea level, although they drop steadily as you gain altitude heading into the hills and mountains. This year round warm weather means there’s no especially bad time to visit the country. The dry season from December to April is arguably the best time to visit, although it’s also high season. So a visit during this time means great weather, but less availability, more crowds and higher costs. The period May through September is often a better time to visit with some rainfall, but still plenty of sunshine and clear skies. There’s also considerably less visitors for much of this period. The wettest months of October and November are best avoided.
