Can you Drive to South Padre Island?

You can drive to South Padre Island by using the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge, which connects the city of Port Isabel with the island. The bridge extends 2.5 miles over the sea and is the only road connection between South Padre Island and the Texas mainland. Built in 1974, it’s the longest bridge in Texas and the best way to get to the island. There is no direct road connection between South Padre Island and neighboring Padre Island to the north.

Where is South Padre Island?

South Padre Island is a barrier island off the southeastern coast of Texas. Close to the border with Mexico, the island is only 2 miles from the mainland at its closest point. This area, opposite the city of Port Isabel, is home to the Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge, which links the island to the mainland. The island consists of the resort town in the south with a long stretch of unspoiled coastline running from the center of the island to the northern end.

How to get to South Padre Island

Located close to the mainland and with a direct road connection, it’s easy to get to South Padre Island from the surrounding areas.

Road – The Queen Isabella Memorial Bridge connects Port Isabel on the mainland with the main resort town on the south of the island. Stretching over the water, the bridge extends to 2.5 miles and is a 4-lane highway. During the peak summer months, the bridge can get very busy.

Boat – The island has no ferry service, given the direct road connection. There are many marinas on the island should you wish to sail your boat across from the mainland.

Air – There is no airport on the island, but the nearby airport in Brownsville services domestic and international flights to the area. Named Brownsville and South Padre Island International Airport, American Airlines and United operate from the airport. The airport also offers a convenient and cheap shuttle service to the island, which takes around an hour and leaves every 30 minutes.

The beaches, restaurants, and bars draw most people to South Padre Island. However, there’s plenty more to see, and here are 5 of the best things to do while visiting:

Laguna Madre Nature Trail – Located close to the convention center, this 400-meter-long boardwalk crosses an area of marshland. It’s a great area to see many of the coastal and migratory birds that South Padre Island is famous for. It’s also a great place to watch the sunset in the evening.

Sea Turtle, Inc – This wonderful little place is a conservation and turtle rehabilitation center. You can see the resident turtles, learn about their lifecycle, and how we can protect their ecosystem. Admission goes to funding the center and protecting these beautiful animals, making this a good family activity.

South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center – This tremendous non-profit organization is home to an alligator sanctuary, a 3300-foot-long boardwalk, and a 5-story high viewing tower. It’s the best place in town to see coastal and migratory birds and butterflies. There are guided bird walking tours, and you can also see and hold snakes and baby alligators.

Largest Outdoor Sandcastle in the USA – Freshly rebuilt and close to the Ferris wheel, this is a fun place to visit. Home to several sandcastles and sculptures, the attention to detail is incredible.

Dolphin-Watching Tours An excellent way to get out on the water is by going on a dolphin-watching tour. Typically lasting 90 minutes, you’ll be on the lookout for pods of bottlenose dolphins. Most tours include an audio tour and follow the coastline, giving you great views of South Padre Island and beyond.

Best Time to Visit South Padre Island

South Padre Island enjoys a fine year round climate with average monthly temperatures not dropping below 60℉, even during winter. This makes the island a great year round destination to visit. During these cooler winter months the island is quieter, although a steady stream of visitors come, escaping the snow and cold in other states. The period around spring break and the main summer months can be both busy and raucous, making the months of April and May the ideal time to visit.
