Can you Drive to Jamaica?

Unfortunately, driving to Jamaica is impossible as it’s an island completely surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. The country’s closest neighbor is Cuba, which lies 87 miles to the north. Such a distance makes constructing a bridge or tunnel between the two countries completely unfeasible. There are also no passenger or vehicle ferry services between Jamaica and the surrounding countries, so travel by ferry is not an option. Unless you plan to travel by freighter or aboard a cruise ship, you must fly if you want to visit Jamaica.

Where is Jamaica?

Jamaica is set in the heart of the Caribbean Sea. It is the 3rd largest of the Caribbean Islands and shares maritime borders with Cuba to the north, Haiti to the east, and the Cayman Islands to the west. To the south is the open expanse of the Caribbean Sea, which extends for over 600 miles before you reach Panama and Colombia.

How to get to Jamaica

Jamaica’s relatively isolated location in the center of the Caribbean Sea limits the options for traveling there and away.

Road – There are no road connections, tunnels, or bridges between Jamaica and the neighboring countries. The only way to get a vehicle to the island is by shipping it on a freight ship.

Ferry – There are no ferry services between Jamaica and the surrounding countries. The only way to get to the island by sea is on a cruise ship, by traveling on a freight ship, or by a private boat.

Air – Given the lack of other options, it’s reassuring to know that Jamaica is well served by domestic and international airlines. The country has 3 international airports in Kingston, Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios. Direct flights are available between these airports and North America, South America, and Europe.

Can you Drive in Jamaica?

It’s an easy and rewarding experience to hire a car and explore Jamaica on your own. It allows you to visit some of the quieter areas of the island and get a glimpse of everyday Jamaican life. Hiring a vehicle follows the same basic process as in the U.S. and you can drive in Jamaica for 3 months with a valid state license. The big differences between driving in Jamaica and the U.S. are the condition of the roads and the side of the road they drive on. As a former territory of the British Empire, Jamaicans drive on the left-hand side of the road. While this takes some getting used to, it shouldn’t deter you from hiring a car. Nor should the state of the roads as the vast majority of major roads are in good condition. Some smaller roads can be in poorer condition with potholes, so be careful if you venture off the main highways.

Best Time to Visit Jamaica

Jamaica shares a common climate with other Caribbean and Central American countries. It enjoys a warm year-round climate with a dry season from November/December through April. The dry season is followed by the wet season, which runs from May through September/October. The latter part of the wet season is also hurricane season and is best avoided.

The best time to visit Jamaica is during the dry season, when days are warm and dry, plus humidity is low. Unfortunately, these ideal conditions mean higher costs and more crowds as it’s also Jamaica’s peak season. The early part of the wet season can also be a good time to visit. It offers a good compromise between weather, cost, and crowds.
